Your Privacy with Seattle Promise
Understanding Your Student Record Rights
We care about your success and your privacy. Your student record contains important information about you and your journey with us. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that gives you control over who sees your educational information. For more information, refer to An Eligible Student Guide to FERPA from the U.S. Department of Education.
Think of it this way: your student record is like your personal folder, and FERPA is the lock that keeps it private. You hold the key. This means you have the right to:
- See your own records: You can always look at the information we have about you.
- Request corrections: If something in your record isn't accurate, you can ask us to fix it.
- Decide what's shared: You choose what personal details we can share and with whom, especially when it helps you get awesome benefits.
Sometimes, sharing a small amount of your information can open doors to incredible opportunities, like free transportation, scholarships, or job connections. We'll always tell you what we want to share and why, so you can make an informed choice.
Important Note: The preferences you set here are specifically for information shared through the Seattle Promise program. This is separate from any FERPA preferences or releases you may have with your individual college (e.g., North Seattle, Seattle Central, or South Seattle College). Your college's FERPA policies and any releases you've completed directly with them will always take precedence for your overall college records.
How We Use Your Information (and How You Can Benefit)
Following are the types of information sharing that can help you access valuable support and opportunities. You can choose what you're comfortable with, and you can change your preferences at any time.
You can give permission for Seattle Promise to share your name, month and year of birth, preferred email, college, enrollment, and Seattle Promise status with partners like:
- Seattle Department of Transportation (for ORCA transit card)
- Seattle Youth Employment Program (for internship opportunities)
- Colleges and universities (for transfer and scholarship help) where you might directly benefit
You can give permission for Seattle Promise to share your share your name, month and year of birth, high school, Seattle Promise status, academic program, enrollment status, credits earned, and information provided on your Seattle Promise application with your high school, community-based supporters, or transfer partners. This helps them guide you through steps like applying for college, taking placement tests, finishing financial aid, attending Seattle Promise events, registering for classes, and transferring to a 4-year college to earn a bachelor’s degree.
You can give permission for Seattle Promise to report to your high school about how you are doing in college including your name, high school, academic program, enrollment status, how many credits you’ve taken, and when you earn a credential. This allows them to improve support for future students including earning college credit for high school classes.
You have the option to deny permission for Seattle Colleges to share any of your student-protected information through the Seattle Promise program. Please note: if you select this option, you will not receive an ORCA transit card, internships, and scholarships at 4-year transfer institutions through Seattle Promise partnerships.
