Appeals, Deferment, and Re-Entry

Need to appeal or defer your scholarship?

Seattle Promise requires that students enroll full-time (at least 12 credits) for each fall, winter, and spring quarter, starting the fall quarter immediately following high school graduation. We know life happens and you may need some added flexibility in certain quarters. Use this process to request flexibility due to extenuating life circumstance (you need flexibility due to reasons outside your control).

Submit a request as early as possible or as soon as you know an appeal or deferment is needed. Click on the links to download the appropriate form and follow the instructions.

Requests to enroll part-time or defer enrollment are due by the 10th day of the quarter for which you are requesting flexibility. You are encouraged to submit your request as early as possible so you can plan accordingly.

Both the part-time and deferment requests require you submit an updated Ed Plan (built in collaboration with your Seattle Promise Retention Specialist). It can take some time to build these plans, make sure to schedule an appointment with your Retention Specialist as soon as you know you plan to submit a part-time or deferment request.

In general, students who lose Seattle Promise eligibility or who “age out” of the program before earning a degree are not eligible to re-enter the program. Those students are encouraged to connect with their college’s financial aid office to explore alternate funding options and to enroll with their college’s TRIO program to receive wrap-around student support.

In September 2021, the City of Seattle’s Department of Education and Early Learning approved Seattle Colleges to make a one-time exception to allow select students who lost Seattle Promise eligibility to re-enter the program.

To be eligible for program re-entry, students must:

  • have graduated from a Seattle Public School in 2019 or 2020
  • have enrolled as a Seattle Promise scholar at a Seattle College (Central, North, or South) in Fall 2019, Winter 2020, Spring 2020, Summer 2020, Fall 2020, Winter 2021, and/or Spring 2021
  • have not yet completed their first associate degree as of September 2021
  • complete and submit a Seattle Promise Re-Entry Form prior to the start of the quarter they wish to re-enter (Fall 2021, Winter 2022, or Spring 2022)

Students re-entering the program will have up to three consecutive quarters to receive Seattle Promise tuition and wrap-around supports while they work toward completing their degree.

Students re-entering the program must complete their financial aid file at the Seattle College where they are enrolled by the last day of the quarter during the quarter they re-entered the program (December 17, 2021; or March 23, 2022; or June 17, 2022).

Students re-entering the program must meet Seattle Promise eligibility criteria to remain eligible for their three quarters (attend a mid-quarter check-in every quarter, enroll full-time each quarter, and maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress).
