Yiqiu Vu CaiSPOTLIGHT: YIQIU VIV CAI (They/Them)

EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Navigator at Seattle Central College

Tell us something about yourself and the work you do at Seattle Colleges:

I am a queer, trans, generation 1.5 immigrant. I believe in the power of education and the power it has to give voices to those marginalized. I joined Seattle Central as the program manager of a student led center (Information Central). I support the students in their effort to help other students navigate the college system. I also help manage the Seattle Central mobile app, a virtual platform that helps deliver students tools, campus information and community building to their fingertips. I am excited to transition to my new role as the EDI navigator and continue to provide holistic wraparound services for the campus.

What in your recent work has made you feel successful?

What has made me feel fulfilled since my time here has been the kind words of my students and the support from my colleagues.

What do you enjoy most about your college?

This is the first community college I have worked at. I am super happy to be able to serve such a diverse community and be part of a campus that truly supports students no matter where they are in their journey.

Canvas New Quizzes Update

In previous communications focused on the Canvas merge and a workshop from instructional designers on Canvas New Quizzes, we stated that Canvas would be deactivating Classic Quizzes and we would have to transition to New Quizzes in 2024. Recently, after receiving substantial feedback on some continuous issues with New Quizzes, Canvas has decided to edit their timeline and currently have not set a new date for the retirement of Classic Quizzes. eLearning intends to support both New and Classic Quizzes until Canvas makes the decision to fully transition to New Quizzes. We will share any new developments as we receive them.

WAMAP and XYZ Homework Update

For Math Faculty: WAMAP and XYZ Homework have both been added to Canvas at the top level which means you’ll no longer need to add it to your own classes each quarter. The workflow for setting up assignments may be different now that the tools are installed at the top level. Please check with your WAMAP and XYZ Homework reps or their websites for more information.

New LEAD (eLearning Education Across the District) Program

The Seattle Colleges eLearning team is excited to relaunch our eLearning Education Across the District (LEAD) faculty development program for the new year! We have been offering a series of workshops in the past few years that collectively built towards a stipend, but we are trying something different for this academic year. Check out our two new paths to complete the LEAD program and register today

LEAD – Introductory Path: Introduction to Canvas for Faculty

In this workshop, participants will get an overview of our institution’s Learning Management System, Canvas. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to navigate Canvas, create content within a course shell, and effectively use many of its core features including, but not limited to, announcements, content modules, calendar, inbox, gradebook, discussion boards, assignments, and quizzing tool.

  • Completed fully online & asynchronously

  • Takes approximately four-to-six hours and pays a $250 stipend

  • Available now!

LEAD – Advanced Path: Guided Course Review

In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to engage with their peers in a collaborative, guided peer review. Participants will both give and receive feedback and will adjust in their chosen course based on that feedback, with an Instructional Designer on-hand for support.

  • Completed fully online, with some required Zoom meetings

  • Takes approximately ten hours total and pays a $400 stipend

  • Will be available starting in Winter 2023!

  • Courses can be chosen from any modality

Finally, for faculty who had started in the LEAD program within the past year, but not yet finished: you absolutely can still finish and earn the $500 stipend. If you are not sure what you need, reach out to Robin Leeson—they can pull your LEAD completions and help you figure out what is left.

Other Canvas Updates

In September and October, Canvas released a few minor updates including:

  • When editing a calendar event, the start and end time drop-down menus have been updated to include 5-minute intervals.

  • Instructors can upload and crop custom images and course images in the Rich Content Editor Icon Maker.

  • In the Google Chrome web browser, the Speech Recognition feature uses browser-set language to translate speech-to-text in SpeedGrader.

Email Accessibility Workshop

Last week, eLearning hosted an email accessibility workshop covering the importance of accessibility broadly and specifically looking at the practice of email accessibility. We are planning more follow-up workshops to cover other topics, like PDF accessibility.

We have created a Canvas shell, including a recording of the workshop, the materials we covered, and additional materials on accessibility. Please feel free to enroll in the Canvas shell and engage with the materials as they are helpful to you.

The Canvas shell also serves as a self-paced course that staff can take in consultation with their supervisor to receive comp time.

Instructional Designers at eLearning are here to help you with creating accessible courses/content and ready to help with all of your teaching needs. Please contact our team via email or set up a time with us via our book me site. We can also be contacted individually via email:
