Choosing a Date

There are many factors that go into choosing an ideal date for Seattle Colleges Commencement each year. The main factor we consider is finding a venue that is large enough to accommodate a districtwide gathering of all of our graduates and guests (Approximately 900 and 7,000 guests). Unfortunately, we do not have a college venue in our district large enough to accommodate all of our graduates and guests. This leaves us to work with an outside venue to find the best date.

Surprisingly there are also a limited number of venues in Seattle that can accommodate the size of our group and there is also quite a bit of competition for space during spring graduation season. Despite these factors, we do our best to consult each of our important stakeholders — students who are graduating, staff and faculty who are volunteering, and college administration — to make sure we consider and accommodate as best we can all the needs and important dates and deadlines at this time of year.

No date is without conflict, but we do our very best to ensure all can participate and enjoy this special day.

Why We Celebrate Together

Holding a districtwide commencement celebration for all three colleges is a meaningful way to honor the hard work, perseverance, and achievements of our graduates on a grand scale.

This collective ceremony highlights the unity and shared mission of the district while recognizing the diverse journeys of students who have reached this major milestone—many of whom are the first in their families to graduate from college. A large, inclusive celebration allows graduates to invite all the family members, friends, and mentors who supported them along the way, ensuring that everyone who played a part in their success can share in this proud moment.

By coming together as a district, we not only celebrate individual accomplishments but also demonstrate our commitment to equity, community, and the transformative power of education.
