The Washington State Employment Security Department provides unemployment benefits to eligible individuals who have lost their employment or had their employment hours reduced.

Medical Coverage After Separation from Seattle Colleges – FAQs
Is it possible to continue my Health Insurance? Yes, you may continue your health insurance through COBRA
What is COBRA? Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 (COBRA). The COBRA act allows you to continue your health insurance coverage by self-paying the cost.
You may stay on your current plan or change plans. You may also decide if you want just medical or dental. You are not required to get both
How long can I stay on COBRA? Since you were laid off you are eligible to continue your health coverage for up to 36 months.
Are there other alternatives? Yes, losing your job-based coverage qualifies you for coverage through the state marketplace for health insurance. For details, see Washington Health Plan Finder.
When do I need to decide to enroll in the COBRA coverage? You will have 60 days from your last day of employment to enroll in coverage through COBRA
How much does it cost? Plans are offered by the state Public Employees Benefits Board (PEBB), and what you pay depends on whether or not you have Medicare. Refer to 2025 PEBB Continuation Coverage Monthly Premiums (pdf)
How do I sign up for coverage?
- Fill out the COBRA Continuation of Coverage Election form (pdf)
- Mail the completed form to the Health Care Authority (address listed on the form)

Are there other alternatives? Washington State Health Care Insurance - You or your family may qualify for free or low-cost Apple Health coverage.
