INTRODUCTION TO INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN (4 CREDITS)
This course introduces instructional design principles and relates the principles to the development of face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses. It includes many resources, is interactive, and encourages much discussion among participants of concepts, ideas and strategies for effective teaching. Example Deliverables: Learner Analysis, Objectives, Assignment, and Rubric.
FACILITATING EFFECTIVE DISCUSSION BOARDS (2 CREDITS)
This course is a deep dive into the types of discussion activities used in online classrooms, the value of discussions for promoting student learning and achievement, and how to increase student participation & engagement in online discussions. This course will be open for two weeks, and participants should expect to check-in regularly during the duration. Participants should expect to spend approximately four hours total on this course.
TEACHING SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE SESSIONS (1 CREDIT)
This course will provide some technical how-to information, but will primarily focus on managing the synchronous session, including strategies for keeping students engaged, polling, large and small group discussions, and more. This course will be taught via Zoom. The session will be recorded, but participants must attend the session to get the EDGE credit, as there will be live learning activities during the session.
SBCTC OER 101: HOW TO USE OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (4 CREDITS)
This is the OER 101 course offered through the SBCTC. This 2-week, asynchronous, online course is designed for faculty and staff who have never experienced Open Educational Resources (OER) or who are just getting started implementing OER. Participants will be introduced to the basic terminologies of OER such as open license, public domain, and copyright. Participants will also have opportunities to practice applying these concepts into the practice. The time commit for this course is approximately 10 hours but individual time contributions will vary depending on participant familiarity with the concepts. Deliverable: Certification of Completion. APPLYING THE QM RUBRIC (4 CREDITS)
The Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR) workshop is QM’s flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the QM Rubric to review online courses. Participants will use the QM rubric to review an example course. There are no perquisites to this course. The course runs for about two weeks, is expected to take about 8-10 hours per week to complete, and is completed fully online. The course is offered through the national non-profit Quality Matters in collaboration with the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges, and course completion is recognized at colleges across the country. IMPROVING YOUR ONLINE CLASS (4 CREDITS)
The “Improving Your Online Course” workshop explores the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and provides a framework to improve the quality of online courses. Participants use the QM Rubric to review their own courses and develop a course improvement plan. The content is based on the 21 essential Specific Review Standards of the Quality Matters Rubric. Participants come away with a plan for course improvement, so to enroll in the workshop, a pre-developed online course is required. The course runs for about two weeks, is expected to take about 8-10 hours per week to complete and is completed fully online. The course is offered through the national non-profit Quality Matters in collaboration with the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges, and course completion is recognized at colleges across the country. COURSE REVIEW (4 CREDITS)
This course will provide faculty with the opportunity to collaborate within a peer review to share, observe, and provide non-judgmental feedback to enhance the quality of their online course by applying the Washington Course Design checklist. Participants will engage in a short session to learn about the checklist and suggestions on providing effective feedback. The reviewers engage with the course as a student using the checklist as a guide and taking notes to share with the course author for improvement and appreciation for work well done. Requirements to run: Minimum: 2 Full developed online course for instruction, taught at least one quarter Commitment to attend a 60-minute training via Zoom to learn about the WA course Checklist, reviewing and making recommendations. Note: If using Publishers’ websites, 75% of material must be in Canvas and all content used must be available for review. Paired participants will set their own deadlines and receive the stipend when the review and enhancements are complete
