Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Unified Student Experience Initiative?

The Unified Student Experience Initiative is a districtwide effort to ensure that every student, regardless of where they enter Seattle Colleges, experiences the same high standard of support, service, opportunity, and care.

The initiative is focused on improving the student experience in ways that lead to stronger enrollment, retention, persistence, completion, graduation, transfer, and workforce outcomes

2. Why are we launching this initiative now?

Students increasingly expect services that are easy to navigate, responsive, and consistent.

At the same time, Seattle Colleges must strengthen its organizational effectiveness and financial sustainability to continue serving students at the highest level.

The initiative provides a unified framework for aligning our people, processes, services, and resources around student success.

3. Is this a reorganization initiative?

No.

While organizational alignment is an important component of the work, the initiative is not being launched to reorganize the institution.

The purpose is to improve student outcomes.

Any organizational changes that emerge will be evaluated based on whether they help create a better student experience and support student success.

4. Is this a budget reduction initiative?

No.

Fiscal sustainability is one of the initiative's strategic drivers, but it is not the destination.

Strong finances enable Seattle Colleges to invest in students, employees, technology, facilities, and support services. Fiscal sustainability is a means to support the student experience, not the purpose of the initiative.

5. What are the goals of the initiative?

The initiative has three primary goals:

Goal 1: Create a Unified Student Experience

Students experience consistency regardless of where they enroll.

Goal 2: Improve Student Success

Increase:

  • Enrollment
  • Retention
  • Persistence
  • Completion
  • Graduation
  • Transfer success
  • Workforce outcomes

Goal 3: Strengthen the Institution

Ensure organizational effectiveness and long-term fiscal sustainability.

6. What does "Unified Student Experience" actually mean?

It means a student should be able to enter through any Seattle Colleges door and experience the same commitment to excellence.

Students should encounter:

  • Clear information
  • Responsive service
  • Easy access to support
  • High-quality learning experiences
  • Seamless navigation
  • Equitable opportunities
  • Consistent expectations

The goal is not to make every college identical.

The goal is to ensure students experience the same level of quality, care, and support.

7. What is the Student Test?

The Student Test is the guiding question for the initiative:

If a student enrolled at any of our colleges tomorrow, would they receive the same level of clarity, support, responsiveness, opportunity, and care as a student at any other college?

This question helps us evaluate decisions, priorities, investments, and organizational changes.

8. How do Organizational Alignment and Fiscal Sustainability fit into the initiative?

They are the strategic drivers that support the initiative.

Operational Alignment Helps Us:

  • Clarify decision-making
  • Improve accountability
  • Reduce duplication
  • Improve service consistency
  • Strengthen collaboration

Fiscal Sustainability Helps Us:

  • Invest in student success
  • Support strategic priorities
  • Improve resource stewardship
  • Build long-term resilience

9. Will this reduce local college identity?

North Seattle College, Seattle Central College, and South Seattle College each have distinct identities, traditions, communities, and strengths.

The initiative is not about eliminating those differences.

It is about ensuring that students receive a consistently excellent experience while preserving what makes each college unique.
