TITLE: Body Substance Isolation

535.10 Precaution to prevent transmission of potentially infectious agents should be practices for all students, faculty, and staff.

The following procedures are established for use at all times when in contact with bodily fluids to prevent transmission of infection:

• 535.10.1 Clean gloves are worn just before contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin. When direct contact with moist body substances (pus, sputum, urine, feces, blood, saliva, etc.) is anticipated, gloves are worn.
• 535.10.2 A gown is worn when soilage of clothing by body substances is anticipated.
• 535.10.3 Masks, goggles and/or glasses are worn when splattering of body substances into mouth, nose or eyes is anticipated.
• 535.10.4 If unanticipated contact with body substances occur, washing is done as soon as possible (hand washing, face washing, etc., as appropriate). Hand washing is indicated whenever the hands are soiled and before touching an individual.
• 535.10.5 Sharps (scalpels, knives, etc.) and needles are placed in puncture-resistant containers.
• 535.10.6 Laboratory specimens are handled as if they all contained infectious material.
• 535.10.7 Handling and reprocessing practices are uniform for all soiled articles and equipment, and all are treated as if infectious agents were present.
