The Seattle Colleges established an agreement in 2011 with Buckland International
Education Group in China to serve as a gateway for people to teach for pay in public schools in China. Our participants have
included community college students, recent university graduates, holders of MATESL or TESOL certificates and faculty/staff from
partner institutions in Washington State who are taking a sabbatical or leave of absence.
People with a bachelor’s degree, TESOL certificates or MA TESOL degrees receive pay commensurate to their
level of certification. Community college students are able to participate based on the exchange agreement between the
Seattle Colleges and Buckland and serve in a paid internship status. The contract information is included on this website.
The first cohort began their contract in early February, 2012. Contracts are for 4.5 months (spring semester begins
in February and fall semester begins in September). Teaching takes place throughout China in public elementary, junior high and
senior high schools. There is a full day orientation prior to each group departing.

Buckland International Education Group in China
Buckland International Education Group, located in beautiful Yangshuo, China, has placed over 1,000 English teachers in their partner middle and
high schools throughout China. Buckland was established in 1999 and has 66 franchised schools including elementary, middle and high schools.
They place teachers in each of these schools. They are the founders of the China Bilingual Research Education Association and partner with many Chinese
education ministry divisions.
Who is a successful teaching candidate?
Buckland Group makes all decisions about whom they will hire. Contracts are between Buckland and the individual participant.
The Seattle Colleges acts solely as an intermediary to refer interested students to this employer.
Candidates must be
*Native Speaker: English was the primary language used at home during childhood and the language for all except foreign language
classes in grades 1-6.
Orientation and Teacher Training in Yangshuo
During the first 7 days in China, you will receive orientation in Yangshuo, near Guilin. Then, within a week or so you will be sent out to your school.
In most cases, there will be 2 foreign teachers per school.

I am thoroughly enjoying my life in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China. This area is famous
for its spicy food so I’m glad it’s a type of cooking I enjoy. Buckland—our sponsor—is a great help with the nuances of
living in a different country, though my school takes such great care of me that I haven’t needed too much support.
I signed my contract for six months and now, with two months remaining, I’m considering an extension. I still plan
to return to Seattle to finish my Education degree, but the more people I meet and the more I learn here, the pull to stay longer is strong.
The lifestyle in China is so different from how I lived in the U.S. The people are laid back and freely express how
they feel; I find myself following their example and it’s been a good adjustment. I get together with DeAna and Kyle,
the other teachers from the Seattle colleges, every Sunday for coffee. We bring the native friends we’ve made and while
they work on their mastery of the English language, we work on our command of Chinese.
Buckland Provides the Following Compensation
(be prepared to cover these costs up front — optional one way airfare from Seattle to Guilin and
optional 2,000 yuan advance on salary are available in Yangshuo at Orientation)
The Seattle Colleges will be providing an initial screening of applications for Buckland Group and sending our
top candidates. Buckland Group will make all final decisions about who they wish to hire based on Chinese legal policies,
best fit and policies of the various elementary / middle / high schools in their consortium and other factors they may
choose to use.
Contracts are signed directly between individual participants and the Buckland Group. Participants who sign a contract with
Buckland will need an official Visa Invitation letter from Buckland to apply for a visa from the Chinese embassy/consulate.
All candidates must purchase major medical/ accident insurance, including medical evacuation and repatriation of remains.
The Seattle Colleges has negotiated a policy that is good for one calendar year from your initial date of entry to China.
Our policy is CIEE’s iNext supplemental policy for study abroad and is only $28/year.
Participants will be asked to pay for this policy or provide proof that they have the equivalency which must include medical evacuation
or repatriation of remains along with basic medical.
By joining the program, the participant is serving as an unofficial representative of the Seattle Colleges. If designated program leaders (Buckland staff, Foreign Affairs Officer)
determine a participant fails to meet the behavioral expectations set out in their contract, that participant may be asked to leave the program and will be subject
to Buckland contractual policies.

I have been assigned to Yang Ling Guo Xin High School in Yang Ling, Shaanxi Province. My first day was March 7.
I teach 5 classes a week to 22 students. While it is a dream schedule, the teaching program is quite rigorous.
The school has a set schedule for what I am to teach (the textbook is called Passages), learning outcomes (speak, hear,
and comprehend the English language), and assessment.
I live in the dormitory, where other teachers and the students live. My window faces the playground. I have, actually,
two separate rooms. One room houses the bedroom and the bathroom. The other is a kitchen/dining room/living room configuration.
I have an office in the administration building, and I have a couple of assistants. I am fortunate, though, in that many
of the people at the school are available to assist me. All with varying degrees of English-speaking ability.
Some quite good, actually.
I adjust each day as the day comes. We are on a holiday Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Tomb sweeping. I traveled with
one of my assistants to the Dao Culture Center Thursday and climbed an incredible amount of steps to the top. And come
to find out there was even more of a top! It was an invigorating adventure, what with two separate bus rides and a photo
opp with a local (his request of me!).
